The Kroniek 2022
In its new, digital form, the Kroniek has been reaching a much larger, and wider, audience of readers. In turn it attracts submissions from scholars based in various countries, and the 2022 edition reflects research in North America as well as Europe, with new discoveries and insights related to Rembrandt and his circle. For the 2022 edition, Stephanie Dickey in Kingston, ON collaborated with Dutch scholar Angela Jager to present a documentary find that sheds light on Rembrandt’s first teacher, Jacob van Swanenburgh.
Another inscription, on a drawing, prompted further enquiry by American scholar Linda Stone Ferrier into the significance of neighbourhood culture for a drawing by Rembrandt. From Charlotte Beck and Katherine Kalsbeek in Vancouver, collaborating across the ocean with Michiel Roscam Abbing in The Netherlands, comes a 20th-century account of a drawing of a chimpanzee and its attribution to Rembrandt. From our home base in the Rembrandt House Museum, David de Witt presents the evidence for patronage of Rembrandt’s friend Jan Lievens from high social circles in Antwerp, in the form of a recently resurfaced male portrait. And fellow Rembrandthuis Senior Curator Leonore van Sloten closes with an In Memoriam for honoured and cherished colleague and long-time friend and collaborator Ger Luijten of the Fondation Custodia in Paris.
